A couple weeks ago, the Buckeye Career Center in New Philadelphia, Ohio inducted over 20 students into the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS). The 24 inductees are studying various career programs including Pharmacy Technician, Intro to Nursing, Law Enforcement, Cosmetology, Construction Technology, Computer Technology & Networking Systems, Medical Assisting and more.

NTHS has over 200,000 student members across the U.S. and beyond representing 108 career and technical education fields, including Pharmacy Technicians.

What is the National Technical Honor Society?

The National Technical Honor Society (NTHS)’s mission is “To honor student achievement and leadership, promote educational excellence, award scholarships, and enhance career opportunities,” states its website.

Being inducted into the NTHS demonstrates your accomplishments as a student, your talent and your commitment to a successful career.

Some of the benefits of being an NTHS member include scholarship opportunities (NTHS will be awarding more than $160,000 in scholarships this year alone), a certificate of recognition, career search assistance and resources and letters of recommendations.

How do I become a Member of the NTHS?

Like Buckeye Career Center, thousands of colleges, technical institutes and high schools have NTHS Chapters. Each NTHS Chapter inducts students completing one of the eligible career and technical education programs (from Pharmacy Technician and Radiology to Apparel/Textiles, Court Reporting and Plumbing) into the Society.

A school’s NTHS Chapter will set guidelines on what makes a student eligible. The national organization sets a minimum standard of a 3.0 GPA; however on average a 3.50-3.75 GPA requirement is set. Additional pre-requisites may include the number of credits already completed, disciplinary and attendance records, involvement in student organizations and/or other criteria.

Student members pay a one-time fee of $25 to the national organization. It is up to the individual Chapters whether they will charge additional dues.

Up to one year after graduation, students who were already inducted members in the NTHS can join as an Alumni Member to benefit from professional development resources.
